Before Your Donation

Eat a Healthy Meal

Have a nutritious meal 2-3 hours before donating. Include iron-rich foods like lean meat, spinach, and beans. Avoid fatty foods as they can affect blood tests.

Stay Hydrated

Drink at least 16 oz (500ml) of water or juice before your appointment. This helps maintain blood volume and makes donation easier.

Get Good Sleep

Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep the night before. Being well-rested helps your body handle the donation better.

Bring Required Documents

Carry a valid government-issued photo ID. First-time donors may need additional documents. Check with your donation center beforehand.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Choose clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up above the elbow. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.

During Your Donation

1

Registration (5-10 minutes)

You'll fill out a registration form with personal and medical information. Staff will verify your identity and provide educational materials.

2

Health Screening (10-15 minutes)

A medical professional will:

  • Check your temperature, blood pressure, and pulse
  • Test hemoglobin levels with a finger prick
  • Review your medical history and medications
  • Ensure you meet eligibility requirements
3

Blood Collection (8-10 minutes)

The actual donation process:

  • You'll recline in a comfortable chair or bed
  • The donation site is cleaned with antiseptic
  • A sterile needle is inserted (slight pinch feeling)
  • About 1 pint (450ml) of blood is collected
  • You can relax, read, or use your phone during collection

Tip: Squeeze a stress ball or flex your hand to improve blood flow.

4

Recovery (10-15 minutes)

After donation:

  • The needle is removed and bandage applied
  • You'll rest and have refreshments (juice, cookies)
  • Staff monitors you for any adverse reactions
  • You'll receive information about post-donation care
